During the recent worldwide pandemic, nurses were primarily the sole caretakers of dying COVID-19 critically ill patients. Due to strict isolation policies, patients were hospitalized without their family; social workers rarely entered the intensive care unit (ICU); and few physicians were present on the unit 24 hours 7 days a week (Foli et al., 2021). This new reality created new opportunities for nurses to provide quality end-of-life care for ICU patients and families.
